Sleep and Anesthesia May Slow Brain Toxin Removal
Experts have long believed that the body clears toxins from the brain during sleep and anesthesia. Yet, a new study suggests the exact opposite may be happening—that toxin removal may actually decline, not increase, during periods of sleep or under anesthesia.
For this study published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers at the UK Dementia Research Institute at the Imperial College London used fluorescent dyes to measure the movement of brain fluids in mice under three different scenarios: those under anesthesia, sleeping or kept awake.
What they found is that toxins were most efficiently cleared from the brain while mice were awake. The rate of toxin removal dropped by 30% in those who were sleeping and by 50% in those under anesthesia.
These results surprised the researchers since it went against the long-held assumptions that toxins clear from the brain during sleep. They say more research is needed to determine why sleep and anesthesia slowed toxin removal, as well as to determine whether the results of this study would be equally true for humans.
15 Little-Known Habits that Cause Premature Skin Aging
You are probably already familiar with certain habits that support youthful-looking skin. Drinking plenty of water, for example, is a must to keep skin looking plump, healthy, and hydrated. Getting too much UV exposure, on the other hand, is a recipe for dark spots, accelerated wrinkling, and other signs of aging.
However, there are also some lesser-known habits that are likely to have an impact on your skin right now. Without realizing it, you could be unwittingly contributing to premature skin aging, making your complexion look older than it is.
One habit is using the wrong soap. Many soaps on the market, particularly facial cleans, strip your skin of healthy oils along with dirt and debris. Plus, they can contain certain types of surfactants that can weaken your protective barrier function, Worse yet, these surfactant molecules frequently remain on your skin even after rinsing.
To avoid this, look for natural soap that contains both cleansing and moisture ingredients, like aloe vera and plant-based oils. You also want to use lukewarm water (not hot) to rinse your face, so you don’t strip your skin of its natural moisture. Plus, here are 14 more habits that can have a sneaky impact on your skin, some of which are sure to surprise you!

Is Your Car Exposing You to Harmful Toxins?
Most cars in the US contain flame retardants, such as in the seat cushions and coverings, which have been linked to neurological issues, cancer-related deaths, and more. Now, a new study has found that the air inside some car models made in 2015 or later is “polluted with flame retardants.” Plus, researchers determined that this vehicle cabin pollution is two to five times higher in the summer than in the winter. Important Skin Cancer News for Those with Darker Complexions
Regular skin cancer screenings are important for everyone, yet individuals with darker skin might benefit from earlier and more frequent exams. Research from the Mayo Clinic reveals that melanoma, which is the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer, frequently eludes detection in those with darker complexions—delaying treatment and worsening outcomes. Earlier screenings and treatment may help. (More)
Do Headaches + High Iron Levels Signal a Concussion?
Typically, doctors diagnose concussions through a neurological examination, symptom check, and sometimes a CT scan or MRI. However, recent research has found those with post-concussion headaches are more likely to exhibit higher iron levels in certain regions of the brain. Plus, those with a history of concussions are more prone to headaches and heightened iron. While more research is needed to confirm the correlation, it hints at the potential of elevated iron as a biomarker for helping to diagnose concussions. (More)

What Causes “Sugar Addiction” + How to Curb It
If you find yourself craving sugar, you’re not alone. Experts say our brains are literally wired to make us crave sweets by releasing the feel-good hormone dopamine when we indulge—and those cravings can become more intense over time. Not eating enough at your meals, stress, and a lack of sleep can all intensify cravings. Have you ever wondered why we blush when we’re embarrassed, shy, or excited? It’s because these emotions cause our bodies to release adrenaline, which causes blood vessels in our face to dilate, reddening our cheeks, ears, and neck.
